The San Jose Peace & Justice Center (SJPJC), a community based  organization dedicated to educating and engaging the South Bay  community around critical issues of peace and justice, seeks an  energetic individual with a strong commitment to peace and social  justice to staff the Peace & Justice Center, coordinate the activities  of volunteer and partner organizations, and build the movement.

This is a part time position ($15 per hour, 25 hours/week).

Organization Background
The San Jose Peace Center was founded in 1957 by individuals profoundly concerned about peace and justice issues, especially the growth of nuclear arsenals and atmospheric nuclear testing. 

More than fifty years later, the Peace and Justice Center, along with our affiliated organizations, continues with a current focus on ending  the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and Palestine as well as many justice  issues.

We provide:
Space and resources for individuals and organizations to meet, mobilize and organize.
Publicity mechanisms such as a weekly calendar of progressive events in the South Bay, a quarterly newsletter, and a website. 
Public forums for education and creative action, including teach ins, film showings, book discussion groups, and mass demonstrations.

Our 21 community partners represent a broad range of local organizations working for social justice in Silicon Valley's diverse communities. Further information about the SJPJC is available at  http://www.sanjosepeace.org

Coordinator Responsibilities
Hours: 4 pm - 7 pm M F in office, plus 10 hrs/wk outreach or other activities: 

  • Work with the Board and officers to conduct anti war and other campaigns. Includes planning rallies and events and mobilizing community members to write letters, make phone calls, and meet with legislators.
  • Work with the Board and officers to plan films, educational events, and fundraising events.  Publicize events.  Includes making flyers and conducting online publicity.
  • Act as a liaison and maintain communication between the Peace & Justice Center and our community partners.
  • Support campaigns and events of our community partners and other community groups.  Attend meetings and events.
  • Represent the Peace Center in coalitions and attend coalition meetings.Conduct community outreach at farmer's markets and other community events.
  • Conduct outreach through social media, including Facebook, Twitter, and  YouTube.
  • Write and solicit articles for our blog and website. Put together weekly email calendar of events.
  • Publicize our TV show.
  • Edit and do the layout for our quarterly newsletter.
  • Coordinate fundraising and newsletter mailings.
  • Recruit and manage volunteers.
  • Manage and update database of donors, volunteers, and supporters.
  • Manage Peace Center phone and email communications.


 Coordinator Requirements
 Strong written and verbal communications skills.
 Ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups of people.
 Self directed worker with strong organizational skills.
 Ability to supervise and support volunteers and interns; previous experience a plus.
 Available to work the hours specified (4 - 7 p.m. M F), plus occasional weekend hours as needed.
 Must be familiar with or be willing to learn MS Word, Access, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign. Familiarity with social media (Facebook, etc.)
 Previous experience with progressive advocacy or community organizing preferred.
 Particular consideration will be given to applicants with any of the following skills (these are not requirements): website design and maintenance; video / film production; bilingual in a language widely used in the South Bay; fundraising or development experience; media or communications experience.


 Salary and Hours
 $15/hr for 25 hrs/wk. 
 SJPJC is a grassroots organization and all our funding is provided by member donations.
 The Collins Foundation, a 501 c 3  non profit is the owner of the house our center uses and is our fiscal sponsor.
