hyattWorkers from the Hyatt Hotel in Santa Clara and their supporters rallied on July 2, 2008 to press for better working conditions and a fair process to choose a union. The rally was attended by over 300 demonstrators which signaled the community’s recognition that hotel workers are an integral, if invisible, part of Silicon Valley’s success as a hub of business.

C. Srinivas, a software engineer and an activist with “Friends of South Asia” said he participated in the rally because unfair labor practices are not an individual issue but directly impact the whole community.

Members of the community, and a wide array of unions, labor groups, peace & justice organizations and religious groups, (including Unite Here! Local 19, South Bay Labor Council, Justice for Janitors, CWA, San Jose Peace & Justice Center, Santa Clarans for Justice, Jewish Voice for Peace, Silicon Valley Debug, Raging Grannies, CHAM, the Inter-Faith Council, etc.) joined the protest in an amazing show of solidarity with the workers. The rally gave the participants an opportunity to hear from workers who were predominantly women of color and immigrant women. The workers that spoke testified to low wages and punishing workloads which subject them to poverty and injury, and demanded jobs with dignity and respect.

This rally follows an earlier action on June 24, 2008 when a delegation of Hyatt workers announced to the management that they wanted card check neutrality agreement as a process to choose a union. The delegation also contained members of the community that demanded a stop to reported intimidation of workers including surveillance, interrogation and other retaliatory tactics.
