Economics for Activists will continue its discussion of Hegemony How-To: A Roadmap for Radicals by Jonathan Smucker at its next meeting at 7 pm July 24 at the San Jose Peace & Justice Center. Built on lessons from twenty years as an organizer, this book is a practical guide to political struggle in the era of the Trump presidency. Smuckers criticizes “activism” based more in self-expression than in serious planning for moving our society from point A to Point B. He calls for “strategic political engagement”, including “contesting and transforming messy everyday spaces” as the essence of grassroots organizing.
The book was published in 2017 by AK Press and is 255 pages long.
Partly based on Smuckers’ valid criticism of the word activism, and partly based on the fact that our readings (like this one) are much broader than the subject of economics, we will also discuss a new name for our group. One suggestion is “Reading Group for Political Revolutionaries”. It has the edginess of the word revolutionary, but also the broad appeal of a term legitimized and claimed by the Bernie campaign.
